One Word for Aceh: Freedom

Freedom.

One simple word, but when spoken in the context of Aceh, it carries a long history of struggle, wounds, hopes, and aspirations.

For me, understanding the phrase “Aceh for independence” should not simply mean separation or conflict. More deeply, it is a question of justice, dignity, prosperity, and the right of the people to determine their own future.

Aceh has experienced a long conflict and ultimately chose the path of peace through the Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding. Therefore, today’s struggle should never return to violence. If we speak about Aceh’s independence, let us understand it through education, a strong local economy, the rule of law, protection of land and forests, and clean and accountable government.

One word: FREEDOM.

But the most meaningful freedom is when the people of Aceh no longer feel abandoned or treated unjustly, and when they have a dignified future in their own homeland.

Aceh does not need another war. Aceh needs the courage to pursue justice, dignity, and prosperity through peaceful means.
